(OOC: Previously written Roleplay just to introduce the character.)
They say that looks can be deceiving. That you never truly can tell what lies beyond the facade without stepping inside and peeling away the layers. Looking at the exterior of this neat, two story, middle class home you would never be able to guess what went on inside. A neatly manicured lawn, wrapped in a white picket fence, nestled in the quiet suburbs of Los Angeles. This was surely the dream sought out by most people. The picture perfect fairy tale home that countless women strive for. However, this home, masked by the pristine surroundings and peaceful outward appearance was hardly a dream come true. In reality, nothing comes without a price. We continue to observe the warm and cozy looking structure as a flat bed pick-up truck pulls into the driveway. An man of average height exits the vehicle. He is burly with strong arms, but without tone. The type of build common among laborers. His flannel shirt is tossed over his shoulder, and he carries a hard hat with him. As he steps out, the once white tank top he is wearing, now covered in soot, paint and other elements that have soiled it, reveals his gut, which hangs over his belt. This was what was commonly referred to as a "beer belly", and suggesting that this man was a drinker was nothing short of an understatement. He makes his way up the drive and towards the house, he enters inside after what appears to have been a long day at work. Now the facade would be broken, as what takes place inside does not mirror the exterior facade in the slightest.
We cut to the interior of the home. The home is mostly dark, and the clock sitting on the wall tells us that it is nearly 8pm. Sunlight still prevails outside on this summer evening, but it's rays are no longer strong enough to illuminate the home's interior. The only lights on at this time were that of the television, which was going. And some light shines from the kitchen where the man would head. In the kitchen, an attractive woman warms a plate of food as she greets him.
Elizabeth: Welcome home, Hun.
He ignores his wife, heading instead to the refrigerator where he grabs hold of a few bottles of beer. He only then nods to her.
Alec: What's for dinner, Liz?
Elizabeth: Your favorite...meatloaf.
Alec: Bring it in when it's hot. I'm watching the fights.
Alec heads back into the living room, he sits down in his leather recliner, just a few feet from the television, placing one bottle of his beer on the end table beside him, and he cracks the other one, taking large gulps as he nearly finishes it straight away. To the right of him, an air conditioner blows cool air on him amidst the heat of the day's work that he's returned from. He finishes down his first beverage, tossing the bottle into a box that is propped near his reclining arm chair. He quickly cracks open the next bottle, taking another swig. Elizabeth returns from the kitchen with his dinner, and two more bottles of beer that she sets down beside him on the table. He stares ahead at the television, not acknowledging his wife once again. He swallows down more of his beverage, and as she finishes setting down his dinner and more drinks, she comments to him.
Elizabeth: Hun, we're out of milk for the morning.
Alec finishes off the second beverage, also tossing it into the box beside his chair. He doesn't take his eyes away from the television screen as he replies, uncaring.
Alec: What do want me to do about it?
Elizabeth: We need it for the kids. How are they going to eat before school?
Again his gaze does not move as he replies condescendingly.
Alec: You popped the little fuckers out, you deal with it. Now do ya mind? I'm trying to watch the fights here.
Elizabeth: I need money. You know I don't make enough at the diner.
Alec: That is NOT my problem. I never wanted those two little bitches Liz.
Elizabeth: And you think that I did?!! What the hell happened to us Alec? What happened to the way it was before?
Alec now stands up, as the argument ensues.
Alec: You want to know what happened Liz? I'll tell you what happened. You got knocked up, and now you want me to take care of everything. Sarah needs this, Rachel needs that What about what I need Liz? Have you ever thought about that?
Elizabeth: You have more than enough to provide for your daughters!! Instead you just want to....drink all your money away!!
Alec raises his hand, ready to strike his own wife as suddenly, the doorbell rings. He lowers his hand and takes a peek through the window, growing increasingly angry now.
Alec: turning to Liz Did you call her Liz? Did you call your fucking sister over here?
Elizabeth: No.
Alec: You had better get rid of them. I'm not in the mood for her shit.
Elizabeth nods as she heads to the door, opening it to her sister, Vanessa and Vanessa's husband, Michael. The two walk straight inside before Elizabeth can say anything. Vanessa looks on in disgust as she sees Alec, who had returned to his recliner, surrounded by beer.
Vanessa: Oh how surprising
Elizabeth: Now isn't a good time.
Vanessa: Oh I think it's a perfect time. Where are the girls?
Elizabeth sighs, lowering her head as she points towards the stairs. Alec stares ahead at the television with anger in his eyes. His night of getting drunk was being interrupted. We see in the shadows of the stairs, an eight year old Sarah and five year old Rachel had been watching on the entire time. The quickly and quietly head back to their room as their Aunt Vanessa and Uncle Michael head upstairs to see them. Vanessa reaches the top of the stairs and turns on the light, walking towards the two girls' room. She opens the door, turning on the light there. Inside was just two mattresses on the floor where the girls were laying. And a single dresser where they would keep their clothing. Vanessa's mouth falls agape as she and Michael turn back towards the stairs and she begins speaking on her way down.
Vanessa: My God what the hell is wrong with you?
She quickly gets down the stairs, and of course this area was full of things to keep Alec comfortable and occupied. Yet despite having the money, his own daughters had nothing for themselves.
Vanessa: It has to be 200 fucking degrees up there, you have no air, no fan? Nothing for those girls!!!
She turns to Elizabeth.
Vanessa: You let this happen?
Elizabeth: I...
Vanessa: Lizzie you may have decided to marry this jerk off, but now you have kids, and they are being neglected. Mattresses on the floor?!!! I know there is enough money coming into this house to take care of them. It's not like you're poor.
Michael shakes his head as he looks at Alec in disgust. Alec is ignoring everything and just sits there, gulping his beer. Vanessa heads into the kitchen, looking through the cabinets and the refrigerator.
Vanessa: For Christ's sake! There is nothing here for those girls. You let him do this? Lizzie you are just as bad as him. Where is the food? All I see if fucking alcohol!!!
Elizabeth sighs again, she looks down in shame, knowing that her husband was becoming increasingly agitated.
Vanessa: I'm taking those kids to mom's for the night. They shouldn't have to live like this...no one should. I swear to God on Monday I'm gonna see about getting them taken out of this house.
She walks back into the living room, staring at Alec in disgust as he drinks his beer.
Vanessa: Oh you'd love that wouldn't you? You piece of shit!!
Vanessa smacks Alec in the back of his head and he stands up quickly as if about to strike her, but Michael steps in his way and stares at him sternly.
Michael: You might get away with abusing your wife. But if you lay one finger on mine, I will kick the ever living shit out of you. So sit back in your little chair, and drink your goddamn beer.
Vanessa, heads to the foot of the stairs.
Vanessa: Sarah, Rachel, get your things sweeties. We're going to Grandma's tonight.
Alec sits back in his recliner as Michael was completely ready to do what was necessary. Alec again swallows some more of his beer. The young girls head down the stairs, each having some clothing with them as Vanessa gets them outside and asks them to wait. She then turns to Elizabeth.
Vanessa: If you're going to mom's with us..let's go. Otherwise, I'm sure she'll be happy to hear what the hell you're letting go on in here.
Elizabeth knew if she stayed there, Alec would beat her for what occurred, so she slowly walks toward the door. Alec now begins to comment.
Alec: That's right leave. Run away bitch. Go to your mom's with those little bitches.
Vanessa: You're a fucking disgrace Alec. You don't deserve my sister or those two precious girls.
Alec: Get out of my house.
Vanessa: Oh trust me asshole, it's with pleasure.
Vanessa and Michael lead Elizabeth outside as well, and Vanessa slams the door behind her as she gathers the girls, and they climb into Michael's minivan and leave Alec there, drinking his beer, and seething in anger. We fade out here.
March 27th 1998 - Tujunga, California
A beautiful Friday afternoon. Sunny skies, a cool breeze. Sarah's twelfth birthday seemed picture perfect in every way. Of course, she wasn't at home just yet. It was now 5:30pm as Sarah stepped outside of the now closing Tujunga Branch Library. As she began walking the few blocks back to her home, she would run into a schoolmate who was riding her bike outside of her own home. The girl waves and pedals toward Sarah.
Girl: Hey Sarah, today's your birthday right?
Sarah nods, but didn't seem completely enthusiastic about it.
Sarah: What's up Lisa?
Lisa: Well Happy Birthday.
Sarah: Thanks, I guess.
Lisa: Doing anything?
Sarah: Just trying to find something else to do before going home.
Lisa: I thought you were gonna be living with your aunt?
Sarah: She's been saying that for years now. It's never gonna happen.
Lisa: Well you can come hang out with me if you want?
Sarah: Maybe later.
Lisa: Okay, well. I'll see you in school on Monday.
Sarah continues walking, her book bag slung over her shoulder as she makes her way down the block. Finally approaching her house, she knew what the scene inside would be like already. Her father drinking as usual, and her mother doing nothing about it. She makes her way up to the door, and little did she know what was going to be different about today.
Inside, Alec sits, watching the television, comfortably seated in his recliner, surrounded by numerous bottles of beer and booze. Elizabeth sits in the kitchen, now having become a heavy smoker, she nervously fidgets with a cigarette and lighter, her hands shaking as a constant symptom of her overall skittishness. A nine year old Rachel runs around downstairs, playing with a doll she'd gotten from her grandmother. This was her means of escape from reality. Rachel, unknowingly runs around in front of the television, blocking Alec's view which enrages him and he lashes out at his daughter.
Alec: You're in the fucking way! Liz, get this little shit out of here. She's starting to piss me off!!
Elizabeth calls out from the other room, unenthusiastically
Elizabeth: Coming Dear.
Rachel stops running as she hears her father yelling, and tears fall from her face.
Rachel: I'm sorry, Daddy.
Alec ignores her and just motions her to get away, as she does, her doll, accidentally knocks into Alec's beer, spilling it. He jumps out of his chair in anger, immediately removing his belt. A heavy leather one, with large studs. Young Rachel's eyes widen as she begins to run away from her father.
Rachel: Mommy!!!
Alec: Come here you little bitch!!
Alec knocks over the entire table as he lumbers forward after his daughter, intent on beating her with the belt. Rachel runs to her mother and holds her tightly, wanting protection from her father. Elizabeth comforts her daughter as she nervously looks to her husband.
Elizabeth: Alec, it was just an accident.
Alec: Liz, don't get me started.
Elizabeth: She's just a child!!
Alec: She's going to learn some respect!! She knows not to walk into my goddamn space!
Alec backhands Elizabeth who stumbles back, falling into the kitchen table and onto the floor. Rachel screams as Her father grabs hold of her, raising the belt in his hands. The front door opens as the commotion continues, and Sarah walks into the ongoing violence. She walks into the house, seeing her mother on the floor, and her father about to beat her sister. Sarah reaches for one of the empty bottles left by Alec, and she hurdles the bottle at him with all of her might. It crashes into the side of his head and shatters, blood trickles from his temple and ear as Sarah screams at her father.
Sarah: STAY AWAY FROM HER!!!
Alec lets go of Rachel as he is stunned. He reaches up to the side of his face and looks down at his hand to see his own blood soaking it. In anger he starts towards Sarah.
Alec: Oh you little bitch you're gonna get it!!
Sarah picks up another bottle and throws it at him, this one smacking him in the face as it shatters, and now he is bleeding heavily. Although dazed, he continues to move forward towards Sarah. His paces slows, and with his loss of blood, combined with his alcohol consumption, he becomes dizzy, and falls back into his chair. His eyes are glazed over. Elizabeth now rushes to her husband's side, instead of to her daughters. She looks at Sarah with resentment.
Elizabeth: Look what you've done! You know what's going to happen now. Look what you've done!!!
Alec, speaks quietly as his energy level is drained and his glazed over eyes still attempt to stare at his own daughter with malice.
Alec: I....want....that bitch....out.....of my...house.
Sarah goes to a very frightened Rachel and leads her upstairs as her mother now yells at her.
Elizabeth: Just leave Sarah. Just leave! You made it worse!!! YOU Sarah, you made this worse. Just....just GET OUT!!
Sarah heads upstairs with Rachel, tucking her into bed. Rachel's eyes begin to swell up as she looks at her sister.
Rachel: P...please don't go. I...I need you.
Sarah brushes her hand over Rachel's forehead.
Sarah: I know you do. But they won't let me stay now. I'll come back for you once I get us someplace to stay.
Rachel: Pwomise?
Sarah: I promise.
Rachel reaches up, giving Sarah a hug. We can see the doubt in Sarah's eyes as she wondered how she would take care of herself and her sister at such a young age. Rachel moves to the corner of her bed in the fetal position as she tries to go to sleep. Sarah begins packing her things. When she is finished, she looks at her sister one last time before heading down the stairs and out the front door, leaving Alec, Elizabeth...and very regrettably, Rachel behind. We again fade out here.
Two Months Later- Los Angeles, California
We watch as a man rushes out of a bakery, running at full speed. He dodges in and out of the crowds of people on the street.
Man: Hey! Hey you...get back here!!
Ahead of him, we see young Sarah, running her fastest, carrying a bag of goods in her hands. She darts in and out between people, turning corners, obviously trying to lose the man. The bakery employee is gaining on her she she continues to run, pulling a trash can down behind her in an attempt to slow him down, she turns another corner, down an alley. The man gets tripped up by the can and loses some distance on her. As she runs down the alley, passing a building, suddenly, from a smaller alley, a hand reaches out and grabs her, covering her mouth as she is pulled into the darkness. The bakery employee now makes it to the alley, where he slows down to look for Sarah. In the darker alley behind one of the buildings Sarah struggles.
Man's Voice:(whispering) Shhhh. He be gone soon. Hush now child.
The voice held a thick accent to it. And Sarah, still was unsure of what was going on, but remained quiet. The bakery employee searches around for a few minutes before giving up and heading back towards his shop. The man now releases his hand from over Sarah's mouth and let's her go. She turns and looks at the man, and she looks completely pissed off, yet nervous as she was still just a kid.
Sarah: What's your problem?
Man: You goin' bout'it all wrong d'ere.
Sarah: Excuse me?
Man: You want'in to eat no? Dat's da wrong way to go bout'it. You get's trouble real fast dat way.
The man steps into the light now and we can see him. He is a dark skinned man, wearing tattered clothing, and had unkempt hair. It was apparent that he lived on the streets as well. He offers a hand to Sarah.
Man: Me name is Kojo...Kojo Jones. Me apol'gies for start'lin ya d'ere child.
Sarah slowly reaches out her hand to the man, still wondering what any of this was about.
Sarah: And what do you care....about what I'm doing?
Kojo smiles warmly.
Kojo: It be survival of the fitt'st. I know me ways when me see it. I got's child o' me own dar'lin. Nat'lie come 'ere. It be okay now.
From back in the shadows, emerges a young girl, around the same age as Sarah. She looks on, confused as well as she steps forward and stands near her father.
Kojo: Nat'lie say hello to dis garl. What ya say yar name was now?
Sarah: I'm Sarah.
Natalie: Nice to be meetin ya d'ere Sarah.
Natalie looks up at her father
Natalie: Papa she be's white. Why she no' home wit her rich folk?
Kojo: Nat'lie, not all white folk be weal'ty.
He looks to Sarah.
Kojo: Where be yar folks little one?
Sarah: I don't have any parents. I live out here, on my own.
Kojo: Oh child, ya can' be out here like dat all on yar own. Come, we don' have much. But maybe keepin' ya's out of da heat for a bit see.
Sarah follows Natalie and Kojo back to a makeshift home behind the building. It is made with mostly cardboard, and has blankets stuffed inside to ease the uncomfortable, hard ground. Kojo and Natalie offer Sarah a place to stay, with them. And they take shelter under the home made tent. The three of them eat the pastries that Sarah had stolen. And with being exhausted, Sarah embraces the thought of sleep in the shade.
Natalie: You can sleep 'ere. Papa gon' get some o' dat dough.
Kojo: Aye. You two be gett'n rest. I come back, wit some green af'ter a while.
Sarah and Natalie rest. Despite being on the streets, the blankets, softening to Sarah, provided the best sleep she'd had in months. When she wakes up, Kojo is returning with a bag, a few items that he was able to purchase for the two girls. Some orange juice, cinnamon rolls and some hot, breakfast burritos he'd gotten from the vendor on his way. He smiles, handing Natalie and Sarah some food, and he sits with them to enjoy a meal. Sarah was surprised at this generosity of the man and his daughter. Kojo, a stranger was like more or a father to Sarah than her own ever was. After they finish eating, the three clean their small, meager area and begin walking. Sarah curious as to what they were to do next.
Sarah: So what now?
Kojo: I's gon' teach ya 'ow to survive out 'ere.
They travel the crowded streets as Kojo explains to Sarah the easier way of making money to survive on. He and Natalie had a system, where they would pickpocket strangers who were well off enough to not be affected by the theft. Sarah listened intently as he explained step by step each action they would need to take in order to obtain money. When he was finished, they spent some time searching the streets for their target for the day. It didn't take long to find him. A young man, well dressed, and well groomed pulls up to one of Los Angeles' upscale shops in a brand new porshe. He gets out of the car, talking on his phone and Kojo approaches as Sarah waits for her moment to strike.
Natalie: (to Sarah) Ya sure yar ready for dis?
Sarah nods as she keeps her focus on the man. Kojo now walks up to him.
Kojo: Good day to ya sir. Can ya spare some change fer a man? I need to get a meal fer me daugh'tar.
The man, brushes him off, being completely rude about it.
Man: Sorry buddy. I can't help you. Go ask a church or something.
Kojo: It's only a small bit o' change dat I askin'.
Man: I said get moving pal.
While Kojo speaks with the yuppy, Sarah quickly moves in behind him, quietly lifting his wallet, which goes unnoticed as the man is distracted by both his phone call, and Kojo. Once Sarah secures the wallet, she hurries back to her place with Natalie, out of sight. And Kojo abandons the distraction. Being sure to thank the man for his rudeness.
Kojo: Ya 'ave a good day now sir.
Kojo moves on as the yuppy walks to his destination, oblivious to his wallet being gone. The three walk back into the alley and find out what they have gotten. Sarah's eyes widen as she realizes just how much they've taken from the guy.
Sarah: There...has to be a thousand dollars in here!
Kojo: Dat is a good day indeed child. Be sure to be takin' da cash and t'row away da rest.
Natalie: Dat be a nice job d'ere garl. Ya's fitt'n right in wit us ha ha!
Sarah removes the cash from the man's wallet and discards the rest into the trash. The three now return to their makeshift tent to decide what necessities to spend the money on. Sarah had now learned how to pickpocket. But would it be enough to support her and Rachel? We fade out here once again.
October 1999- Los Angeles, California
It was just over a year now since Sarah, now thirteen years of age had learned the trade of the streets, thievery. However, as autumn was in full swing, mild in a city like Los Angeles, if there was even any autumn weather to speak of, Sarah found it difficult to earn as much in her ventures. Just a few months ago, Kojo had been arrested after he attempted a larger scale robbery. Natalie was taken away and brought to a juvenile detention facility after a witness identified her as her father's accomplice. Sarah managed to escape the scene unnoticed. But working alone was more difficult, and the profits were sometimes barely enough. Now she wandered the streets, it was just about noon and the hustle and bustle of the big city was in full swing. She blended in easily with the crowds. However, thievery was not on her mind at this time. She constantly wondered how her sister Rachel was coping inside of that house of madness. She knew that Rachel had probably given up hope, as Sarah herself realized she would probably never be able to return for her sister as she had promised. She wasn't making enough money, and had no place for her younger sister to stay. Sarah didn't know it, but all of this was about to change. She walked towards a stop light. Waiting along with everyone else to cross a busy street when she noticed a think envelope, peeking out of a woman's pocket. This envelope was very thick, and her trained eye could spot that there was money inside....lots of it. She moved forward slowly, and with a skilled hand, lifted the envelope from the woman. Just as Sarah was about to turn and disappear into the crowd, she was stunned as the woman, who never once looked back, began to speak.
Woman: Please be a dear and place that back where you found it young lady.
Sarah was completely surprised by this. It may have been possible that the thickness of the fold alerted the woman to her lifting it. But how did this woman know that it was a young girl who was taking it? How did she know without ever once turning around to see Sarah? The woman waits as Sarah, completely stunned, returns the envelope to its place.
Sarah: Look, I'm sorry. Just don't call the cops okay?
The woman turns around now to look at Sarah, she smiles warmly. Her hair is wild and wavy, a dark raven color. She wears clothing of vibrant colors, deep purples and reds, outlined with black and white. Around the woman's neck, a sparkling emblem of silver caught Sarah's eye among all else. The odd charm was something Sarah had never seen before. A five pointed star within a circle...a pentacle. The woman speaks to Sarah softly, with a kind a caring voice.
Woman: I am not going to call the police. I can sense a troubled spirit when I see it.
Sarah: Lady, you're crazy. Look, I gave you back your money. If you aren't calling the cops. I'm out of here.
Woman: You are in need of stability. Where will you go if you leave now? Back to the streets? Perhaps you may find someone who is not as forgiving as I. What will you do then?
Sarah is very confused and looks oddly at the woman.
Sarah: What is it you want?
Woman: It is not what I want that is at question. It is what you need. I am offering to help you. The choice to accept it is yours.
Sarah: Help me...how?
Woman: You need a place to stay, yes? And you obviously are in need of money. I can offer those both to you, legally.
Sarah: I'm not stupid, no one gives you anything for free.
Woman: Indeed you are correct. Which is why I am offering you a job, working for me. In exchange, I will give you a place to stay, food, and will pay you fairly for your work.
Sarah hesitates. This sounds far too suspicious to her. However, she nods and accepts the offer nonetheless. Knowing that her current means of survival were not cutting it. The woman offers her hand to Sarah.
Woman: What is your name dear?
Sarah: I'm Sarah.
Woman: Pleasure to meet you, I am Selene.
As the two become acquainted with one another, a bus arrives at the corner and lets off a few passengers. Selene and Sarah board the bus. Sarah taking a gamble as she heads to an unknown destination.
Later That Day- Sunland, California
Madame Selene's Occult Shop
As the two step off of the bus and begin walking just a few doors down. Sarah notices the shop. The same symbol which dangled around Selene's neck was prominently emblazoned into the storefront's awning. Selene removes a key from her pocket and opens the door to the shop, Sarah steps inside, with Selene just behind her, turning on the lights. Sarah is astonished at what she sees. Candles, oils, incense, charms among other things were neatly displayed everywhere. The shelves of the store were lined with books on the occult, witchcraft and the paranormal. Sarah had never seen anything like this before. Selene smiles as she notices Sarah's amazement.
Sarah: What is all of this?
Selene: Tools of the trade my dear.
Sarah: What trade?
Selene: Magick.
Sarah rolls her eyes and looks at Selene.
Sarah: Come on be serious. I'm not six, I don't believe in magic.
Selene: Most people are groomed to see the world in it's own mundane existence. It takes a special person to open their eyes to what lies beyond. Many things are possible when you let your mind explore what others cannot see.
Sarah: Okay, this settles it, you are crazy. I'm leaving.
Selene does not try to stop Sarah from leaving. Sarah returns to the door and opens it. Selene strikes a match, lighting a candle, as she does, an entire row of candles follows, seeming to light on their own. Sarah jumps back a bit, not believing what she just saw.
Sarah: How the HELL did you do that??!!
Selene again smiles warmly.
Selene: It's all a matter of having an openness with the world that surrounds you. Everything has a balance that acts as one. But only if you are willing to allow your spirit to connect with it. Leave if you wish. Or, you can stay, and I can teach you to see the world through clearer eyes.
Sarah hesitates, but her eagerness to learn new things draws her curiosity and she closes the door, remaining inside of the shop. Selene moves about, taking care of a few small duties, allowing Sarah some time to browse the store. Despite Sarah's earlier attempt to rob her, Selene leaves Sarah alone with the merchandise as she goes to the back of the store to put away her envelope. Sarah slowly walks through the shop, looking at everything. She flips through the pages of a few books quickly, just getting an idea of their contents before placing them back on the shelves. As she continues to browse, her eyes lock on a small glass casing, containing some charms. Inside there is a sterling silver necklace, almost identical to the one Selene wore. Sarah was in awe of the pentacle charm, and wished it was hers. Selene returns from the back to find Sarah taken with the charm.
Selene: You like that one?
Sarah nods her head.
Sarah: How much is it?
Selene moves behind the case, removing the charm. She then hands it to Sarah.
Selene: This one, is not for sale. It was waiting for the right person, and now she has come along.
Sarah: Wait. You're just...giving this to me?
Selene: It has chosen you. So go ahead, try it on. She smiles.
Sarah puts the necklace on, looking at herself in the mirror, she likes how the pentacle looks around her neck. She comments to Selene as she tries it on.
Sarah: So how does a piece of jewelry choose someone?
Selene: Each piece has a representation of power. A power that lies within each of us. Every one unique. Only when this aura of power matches, does the piece bare it's true meaning. That one, was meant for you.
Sarah is still a bit confused, but she was given this gift that she enjoyed, and wasn't about to argue with why she'd been given it.
Selene: There is a great power about you, a will of determination like none I have seen before. With knowledge, you will learn about yourself. You will embrace who you were meant to be. What you have been placed here to do.
Sarah: What do you mean? Placed here to do?
Selene hands Sarah a book, with various Pagan symbols on the cover. The book itself is black, and the symbols sparkling in silver embroidery on it's cover. Sarah takes hold of the book, looking down at it.
Sarah: So you want me to learn...witchcraft?
Selene: That will come in due time. This book, is about an exploration of yourself. The inner spirit that lies within. Witchcraft can be taken to a place of light, or it can be taken to a dark place. That choice is found within each of us. And you must find it Sarah. That book will show you how. It will find your innermost peace...but it will also show you the darkness. Each of us has a balance of good and evil within our spirit. You must find that balance. Sarah, in order to truly prepare yourself for what you are destined. You must explore all that is good within yourself....but also, you must face what lies within you, that is evil.
We look at Sarah's deep emerald green eyes as they stare down at the cover of the book. She looks on intently, contemplating what she would do. Wondering what she would find within her own self exploration. As we close in on her eyes, there is a flash in them of peace, and serenity...but this is also followed by a flash of a dark, cold, emotionless stare. Our scene fades to black.
January, 2000 - Sunland, California
It has been said that good lies within each of us. That even the most vile and despicable of all have a light hiding within them ... somewhere. When given the chance, that light will grow, and it will shine. However, when evil is allowed to fester within. It too will grow, and the ramifications of its bounds are endless. It takes but one deed to undo all else, good ... or evil.
Sunland is a beautiful place. Quiet, much more slow paced than the neighboring city of Los Angeles. The convenience of being so very close to the city, the beaches, and almost anything you needed, mixed with the serenity and peacefulness of a quaint suburb, being set apart from the chaotic city life. This was truly a haven. We watch as a small car pulls up against the curb, parking. Birds chirping, cool breezes on this sunny day. Even in the middle of winter the area had almost perfect weather. Stepping out from the car, we see Madame Selene and a still quite young Sarah Twilight. Young Sarah stands, folding her arms as she looks ahead of her, obviously unaware of what the purpose of this trip was.
Sarah: What are we doing?
Selene: I want you to meet someone. I think you'll have fun.
Sarah: I was doing just fine staying at the shop and reading.
Selene: Come now, let's go inside.
Reluctantly, Sarah folows Selene inside of the building. As they enter, we can see people vigorously working out, and people inside of wrestling rings, tossing each other around. As they move through-out the place, Sarah is observing everything, wondering exactly why Selene would bring her to a place like this. Selene scans the room for a moment, finally spotting who she was looking for. She smiles down at Sarah and the two head towards a young man who is watching a few of the combatants.
Selene: Logan?
The man turns around.
Logan: Ah, Selene. It's been such a long time. How have you been?
Selene: I have been well. And yourself?
Logan: Doing well.
He glances at Sarah, then looks back to Selene.
Logan: I...thought you were no longer running the Children's home?
Selene smiles.
Selene: I've not in quite some time. People do not understand by beliefs and, well, you know that creates problems.
Logan: It's a shame, you were doing such a great service to the community.
Selene: I try to help where I can.
Logan: So who is this?
Logan again glances at Sarah.
Selene: Her name is Sarah. I brought her here in hopes that we could....redirect some of her...energy, shall we say.
Logan smiles and extends his hand.
Logan: Well hello there, Sarah. I'm Logan.
Sarah folds her arms and gives him a slight nod. Logan looks back at Selene.
Logan: So what can I do to help?
Selene looks to Sarah.
Selene: Sarah, please have a seat over there so I can discuss a few things with Mr. Hawkins. I promise I will let you know as soon as we're through.
Sarah rolls her eyes and walks away, taking a seat down beside one of the wrestling rings. She leans back in the chair and watches the training wrestlers go over the motions. Meanwhile, Selene and Logan walk towards his office as they talk.
Selene: Sarah, she's a very gifted, very bright young girl. But she possesses such anger within her. I have yet to get everything out of her, but from what I can tell, she grew up with severe neglect.
Logan: And the parents? What do they think of your involvement?
Selene: She's been on her own for two years now. I have given her a place to stay, and something to occupy her time, but it isn't enough.
Logan: (sighs heavily) I don't know, Selene. I have helped you before, but those were legal cases. Every one of those kids were under your care legally. I don't know if I want to jeopardize everything for a runaway.
Selene: She didn't run away, Logan. Her mother and father ousted her.
Logan: How old?
Selene: She was twelve.
Logan: Why didn't you contact the sheriff's office?
Selene: So they could see to it that she is allowed back into that house? That madness? A few days in lockup for her father, only to enrage him more?
Logan: I see your point....well how does she fair with academics? You know my policy on scholastics.
Selene: Straight A student.
Logan: And she has this much of an issue that you brought her here?
Selene: She excels at any task that she draws interest. She is very intelligent, it is the anger and rage within her that I wish to direct into something positive.
Logan: How are her feelings towards taking this on?
Selene: She is unaware of why she is here.
Logan: Do you really think it was best to bring her here unkowingly?
Selene: I think she will take to it. If she is unwilling, I will not pressure her.
Logan: (sighs) Alright, we'll see what happens.
Selene and Logan exit the office and back onto the main training floor. Sarah is still seated, watching the trainees intently, almost as if studying every move. One of the trainees is practicing a DDT, and repeats the manuever several times. Logan and Selene approach Sarah.
Selene: Sarah, Logan would like to speak with you now.
Sarah glances over at them, and she stands, looking rather annoyed as she again folds her arms.
Sarah: What?
Logan: How would you like to spend some time training here after school? It would be a great activity and I....
Sarah: I work at Selene's shop after school. Don't have time, sorry.
Selene smiles, trying to offer a hand.
Selene: Oh, that would be no trouble. You know I can manage. Have some fun, enjoy yourself. You can spend as much time as you like at the shop. Just give this a try.
Sarah rolls her eyes.
Sarah: Wrestling is for guys ... not for girls. I don't see any other girls here.
Logan: You would be the first...but why should that stop you?
Sarah: Maybe because I don't want to wrestle? It does nothing for me.
Logan nods.
Logan: I understand, Sarah. No problem. I am sorry for wasting your time.
Sarah walks past him with an attitude.
Sarah: You should be.
As she passes him, Logan looks to a disheartened Selene, and smiles as he turns back and calls out to Sarah.
Logan: You seemed to be watching my students pretty intently.... for someone with no interest that is.
Sarah stops, and turns around, rolling her eyes again at Logan.
Sarah: It's not like there was anything else to do here.
Logan nods again, smiling.
Logan: I understand.. ..you know, it would mean so much to Selene if you would step into the ring ... just one time.
Sarah places her hands on her hips.
Sarah: Is that so?
Selene nods her head.
Sarah: One time, and we get the hell out of here?
Selene: You have my word.
Sarah shakes her head, annoyed with this, but she heads back over.
Logan: Step into the ring with William over there.
Logan points her to the ring he was mentioning. A rather hefty boy is in the ring. Quite the gut and obviously MUCH larger than Sarah. She glances over to the ring and looks back at Logan.
Sarah: Are you out of your mind?
Logan: Not at all. Just go step into the ring, take him down, and you can leave.
Sarah: Take down tubby? That kid is like ten times my size.
Logan: To the determined spirit, one's size does not matter.
Selene: Logan, she's had no training ... that boy is...
Logan: I am aware Selene. Nothing to worry about.
He looks back to Sarah.
Logan: It's as simple as it gets. Take him down, and walk out of here. I won't ask anything else of you.
Sarah looks at him oddly, she walks towards the ring where the fat kid was at, she looks back again, waiting to hear that this was a joke and she wasn't really expected to step into a wrestling ring with a kid who knew what he was doing and outweighed her by so much. But the joke never came. She exhales heavily and steps inside. Logan and Selene move alongside the ring, watching her.
Logan: It's alright Sarah. Just think about what to do.
William chuckles a hearty, jolly laugh.
William: Are you kidding me? This little girl, take me down?
Sarah eyes him, knowing his girth was far too much for her to lift, and she wasn't trained in any of this. What could she possibly do to take this fat bastard off his feet? She wanted nothing more than to get back to the shop, get back to her studies. William continued to scoff.
William: We ain't got all day here.
Sarah narrows her eyes at him.
Sarah: Shut up tubby. You have bigger breasts than your mom I bet.
William screams out.
William: Don't talk about my mom!!!
He starts lumbering towards her, each step shaking the very ring it seemed. All that Sarah could think of is how fat this kid was, and now he was like a charging elephant. What to do? And then ... WHAM! ! She sends a kick directly between his legs, William doubles over, gasping. His face turns red, then purple as she nailed him dead on. Almost without even thinking about what she was about to do next, she drops William down with a DDT, not even realizing it. She quickly rolls outside of the ring and smirks at Logan.
Sarah: Tubby is down. Now I'm outta here.
Logan looks at Selene with shock.
Logan: She's never trained before?
Selene: Only what she was watching while we spoke.
Logan jogs up to Sarah who has wasted no time heading for the door, she had no interest in this place.
Logan: That was very impressive. You seem to be a natural at this. Are you sure you don't want to stick around?
Sarah opens the door to exit, she pauses and looks at Logan.
Sarah: I am sure that I don't have time for this stupid place, stupid fat kids, and stupid wrestling.
Logan: If you ever change your mind...or get bored. The doors are open.
Sarah: Thanks, but no thanks.
Sarah walks out and heads to the car, waiting for Selene. Logan waits by the door as Selene makes her way towards the exit now as well.
Selene: I suppose we can say we tried.
Logan: That we did. So much talent ... to pick up the execution like that without ever practicing it on her own. But no interest.
Selene: She must have some interest, or she would not have picked it up so quickly. Sarah ... she is very stubborn, but when she finds something she enjoys ... nothing stands in her way.
Logan: Perhaps she'll accept the open invitation at some point.
Selene: Perhaps.
Selene gives Logan a hug, and exits as well, she heads to a waiting Sarah, and the car. The two drive off as we fade out here.
May, 2000 - Sunland, California
Come on, Sarah! You'll be late for school!
I'm coming. Relax!
We can hear as Sarah calls downstairs to Selene. Our scene opens inside of Selene's main shop area, which is not yet open for the day. Sarah comes racing down the stairs into the shop, all of her belongs for school with her. Selene smiles and shakes her head as the young teenager does what mostly all teens do, rushes around in the morning.
Selene: Finals today?
Sarah: Yeah, gotta go.
Sarah hurries towards the door.
Selene: Sarah, don't forget, I am heading down to San Diego this afternoon. The shop is closed for the day. You have your key right?
Sarah: I got it.
Selene: Please pick up the inventory supplies on your way back from school.
Sarah: Okay. See ya.
Sarah heads out in a dash. Selene tends to a few things, preparing for her trip that afternoon.
Later that day
The 3:00 bell rings as we see the exterior of Verdugo Hills High School, nestled just on the border of Sunland and Tujunga. Hundreds of students begin pouring through the exits. Some of them hanging around, chatting and gossiping. Others, being picked up by their parents. We focus in on Sarah, who quickly leaves the campus and starts walking, she looks at the time and quickens her pace, heading towards the supply store to pick up Selene's order. She makes it in time, and gathers the supplies, just a small amount of things such as receipt paper, and an inventory booklet. As she makes her way the main shopping district of Sunland, she stops, looking at something.
Sarah: (to herself) No Sarah. This is stupid. Just go home and read.
She thinks for a few more moments and finally she sighs, turning and walking inside of a building. Inside, we recognize this as Logan Hawkins' school of Professional Wrestling. She looks around for a moment, and decides this was a bad idea and turns towards the door once again.
Is that who I think it is?
Sarah stops at the door and hesitantly turns around as the voice calls out. Logan had noticed her before she was able to slip back outside.
Sarah: I was just leaving.
Logan: Well you obviously came in here for a reason.
Sarah: I made a mistake. I have things to do.
Logan: I see.
Sarah: What does it matter to you, anyway?
Logan: It doesn't. It's your choice to make.
Sarah: Good, then I'm going.
Logan: Take care.
Sarah pushes the door open, but she doesn't walk outside, she stops, and lets the door close, looking back at Logan.
Sarah: Why did Selene bring me here? What is so damn important about wrestling?
Logan: Maybe nothing. But it would be a way for you to release some of that anger you have inside of you.
Sarah: Excuse me?
Logan: You walk around with a chip on your shoulder, why?
Sarah: None of your business.
Logan: No, it isn't. But what is my business is why you came into my school. Either you're here to learn, or you aren't.
Sarah: Like I said, I'm leaving.
Logan: Is that what keeps you so angry? Just taking the easy way?
Sarah: You don't know a damn thing about me.
Logan: You're right, I don't. Why don't you show me that I'm wrong?
Sarah glares at him for a long moment, finally she places her backpack and bag of store supplies on one of the benches and she stands arrogantly in front of Logan.
Sarah: I will!
Logan smiles as he leads Sarah over towards the other students.
Logan: Aright guys, listen up. I want to introduce you to the newest member of our class. This is Sarah.
A few Months Later
Various scenes fade in and out of Sarah practicing maneuver after maneuver. She would perfect each one, getting angry with herself whenever she could not master something in the first few tries. We see her stretching, developing speed and coordination with a punching bag. Doing various workouts and using submission and a ground based, technical style to take down her opponents, all of whom were larger than her and all of whom were male. Our scene changes now to show Sarah at a weight bench, a large amount of weight on the bar. One of the students rushes over to inform Logan.
Henry: Mr. Hawkins, Sarah has too much weight on that bar and she's not listening to us.
Logan drops what he is doing and heads into the weight room. Sarah is positioned on the bench press, wrapping her hands around the bar, preparing to lift.
Logan: Sarah! What are you doing? That is too much weight for you!
Sarah glanes up from the bench, not yet having lifted the bar.
Sarah: How else am I going to get better?
Logan: You're doing great. But Sarah, that's two hundred and fifty pounds!! That's more than twice your weight.
Sarah: I can lift this.
Logan: You've only been working with one hundred pounds, Sarah. You can't graduate to more than double that so quickly.
Sarah rests her head back down and lifts the bar off of the stand...the weight immediately forces her arms down and the weight presses down against her. She begins turning red, and Logan rushes over with a few students to help her. They reach for the bar, Sarah muffles out.
Sarah: No!
She is struggling with the weight but remains stubborn. In short, gasping breaths she unbendingly remarks.
Sarah: Hrrmmmph I'll do it ... hmmmrppppphhh myself.
Logan halts in removing the bar from her, at least for just a moment.
Henry: Are we gonna help her?
Logan: Not yet.
Sarah grits her teeth and narrows her eyes, she struggles a bit more. It takes her quite some time but amazingly, she manages to push the bar back up and places it on the rest. Hardly a full repetition of bench presses with such weight, but she manages to lift it just once on that day ... that in itself was a victory.
Logan: Are you alright, Sarah?
Sarah breathes heavily.
Sarah: I'm fine.
Logan: You could have killed yourself.
Logan walks over toward one of the coolers within the weight room and retrieves a bottled water, handling it to Sarah. She takes it, sitting up, and she drinks it down quickly.
Sarah: I'm sick of repeating the same things. I want to do what everyone else can. I need to be able to lift more.
Logan: That may not be unreasonable after what we just saw. (he chuckles)
Logan takes a seat across from Sarah and talks with her.
Logan: You have a determination inside of you, Sarah. Anything that you want to accomplish, you will. Just don't try to move pace too quickly, okay?
Sarah nods.
Logan: Alright, hit the showers. You did well today.
Sarah grabs her gym bag and heads out of the weight room as our scene fades out once again.
December, 2001 - Sunland, California
We hear the jingle of small bells as we watch the door to Selene's quaint shop open. Selene looks up from the counter to see Logan entering the shop. A worried look befalls her face as she knew that at this time of the afternoon, Sarah should be training.
Selene: Logan, what's wrong?
Logan: Calm yourself, Selene. Everything is fine.
Selene: But Sarah, is she not at class?
Logan: She's there, working hard as ever. But she wanted to stay longer today with the others. She asked me to bring you this list. Says she wanted to read those when she gets it.
Selene sighs with relief and takes the list, now smiling.
Selene: She has come around so much, hasn't she?
Logan: It's really amazing to see. At first, I thought we'd never simmer that anger of hers.
Selene: She's finally happy with her life. I can see the difference every day with her. She's kinder, friendlier with people. She's even become helpful to others on her own will.
Logan: She has a reason to enjoy life, and it's thanks to you.
Selene: You have done so much to help me with her. Thank you.
Logan: Anytime. ... You should come see her today. She's about to earn another trophy. I'm sure she would be excited to see you there.
Selene: I wouldn't miss it for the world.
Logan smiles as he heads out. Selene looks over the list Sarah had requested and begins gathering the books.
Later That Day
Inside of Logan Hawkins' School of Professional Wrestling, we watch on as Sarah is working with two students in the ring. The two students are practicing a rolling arm-bar. One of the two boys can't quite seem to figure it out and is getting frustrated with himself. It is here when we see a side of Sarah that has been long forgotten. She steps in, talking to the boy.
Sarah: Calm down, you'll get it Richie.
Richie: I keep trying it, and all I keep doing is screwing up.
Sarah: Try it slow first. Get the motions and then after you've done that a few times, try it in one set.
Richie: I keep forgetting when to roll, and I lose the grip.
Sarah: Look, slow, like this.
Sarah and the other boy work out the motions slowly. She wrenches the arm and looks to Richie.
Sarah: Wrench, then stepover.
She executes the stepover. And then completes the roll, and finally locks the hold into it's final position.
Sarah: It's four motions, just look at them separately and you'll get it. Now you try.
Sarah releases the hold and stands up. The other boy gets back up and gets ready for Richie to make his attempt.
Richie: Wrench, stepover, roll, lock it.
Richie attempts this slowly and by taking his time, he is able to perform the manuever correctly. He is very excited. As he gets back to his feet, the other boy high fives him. Richie looks to Sarah.
Richie: Thanks.
Sarah: No problem, just keep practicing it. You'll be a pro at it.
She smiles.
Richie: I hope so.
We hear the sound of a whistle being blown as Logan calls everyone to the main floor. They all sit down on the large sparring mat that was there.
Logan: Alright people, it's the end of the year, and we have awards to give out.
Logan has a few trophies and medals to hand out, he picks up the first trophy and holds it in front of him.
Logan: Now the first award I am presenting is very special. I have presented awards to this person as a student, and now I am proud to present this award to my newest junior trainer ... Sarah Twilight.
The class applauds as Sarah gets up and walks over to Logan, he hands her the trophy and smiles.
Logan: You've worked hard, Sarah. I know that you can pass on the will and determination to help boost others. Which is why ... the next award we have, you will be choosing who gets it ... as a trainer.
Sarah looks surprised by this, Logan picks up another trophy and he holds it in front of him.
Logan: This award is for the year's hardest working student. So tell us, Sarah. Who in the class gets it?
Sarah looks around at the class for a bit, many of the students there performed well, and it was probably a hard choice to make, but the choice she did make, surprised everyone ... everyone but Logan.
Sarah: Richie Parker.
Logan: Excellent choice. Now tell us why?
Sarah: Richie shows up every day, he struggles to do this, and yet he keeps showing up, and he keeps trying. That is a hard worker.
Logan smiles in agreement with Sarah as Richie walks up to the front and accepts his trophy. Sarah looks around the room now, and finally spots a smiling Selene, standing by the door. She rushes over to her as the remainder of awards are handed out. She gives Selene a hug.
Sarah: You came!
Selene: Of course I did ... and just in time to see you do something so very kind.
Sarah: It was nothing special.
Selene: For you, believe me it was. I am so very proud to see the changes in you. Such a difference.
Sarah: You and Logan have done so much for me....I think everyone should be treated that way.
Selene: Indeed, everyone should. But in this world, that doesn't always happen. So long as you remember that, you'll find it easier to show compassion.
Sarah: Thank you ... for everything.
Selene: It has been a pleasure for me to know you, Sarah. Keep up the hard work. You're going to make something out of life.
Sarah: I'm not worried about that. But ... you know, I almost have enough money to care for Rachel. A few more months and I should be able to get her. Is it ... rude of me to leave after all the help you've given me?
Selene: No, Sarah. I understand. I know that you want for your sister what you have, happiness... life. Speaking of that, I have something for you when you get home. Think of it as an early...Christmas present. (she smiles)
Sarah: Christmas? You don't celebrate Chr...
Selene: Shhh. For this occasion, I think we can make an exception.
Sarah smiles and gives Selene another hug. We fade out once more.
That Night
Sarah arrives back at the shop a little earlier than she expected. Selene was there, awaiting any customers, which was unlikely at night, but she continued working anyway. Sarah is surprised to find Selene still working, the shop was usually closed by now. She steps inside and approaches.
Sarah: What are you still doing down here?
Selene: Business has been slow. I've extended shop hours for the holiday.
Sarah: I can handle the shop for the rest of the night. You should get some rest.
Selene: I appreciate that, Sarah. But first, there is something I want to show you. I have that Christmas gift, remember?
Sarah: (curiously) Okay....
Selene leads Sarah through the back of the shop to where Sarah's room was located. She opens the door to the room and turns on the light. Sarah steps inside and looks around. All of her things were there, but now there were two beds in the room. and extra dressers. Sarah looks back at Selene.
Sarah: What is all of this?
Selene: I have known that you've wanted to take your sister from that miserable home she is living in. I know you have been struggling to make that happen. So Logan and I ... we made some adjustments to accomodate her as well.
Sarah's eyes become wide with joy and she can't believe it.
Sarah: Are you serious? Rachel can come and stay here ... with me ... with us?
Selene nods and Sarah hgs her tightly.
Sarah: Thank you. Thank you so much!! Selene, you are the closest thing I've ever had to a real mother. Thank you!
Selene returns the hug and smiles, knowing how happy Sarah was to hear this.
Sarah: Now you go get some sleep. I'll work the shop. It's the least I can do.
Selene: Are you sure? You've had a long day.
Sarah: It's no trouble. Please, go rest.
Selene smiles at Sarah and retires to her own room as Sarah returns to the shop floor and sits behind the counter. She smiles and shakes her head again as she looks down to see Selene had neatly stacked the books she'd wanted to read. Sarah gets comfortable, picking up one of the books. She turns on the shop's small television set, with the sound kept low in the background as she begins reading.
Sarah: (reading) Hmm, Harvest Moon Cermonies.
She sits there for quite some time, reading, studying the books, she is peaceful and enjoying herself. In the background the news is playing on the television. At first, this does not interrupt Sarah's studies, but something catches her attention as she hears a reporter in the background.
Tujunga teen brutally attacked in attempted mugging
Sarah looks up at the television, immediately placing her book down, she turns up the volume and listens intently, watching the footage as they reported live.
The young teen was found just outside of her home late this evening. It is suspected she was attacked while trying to enter the home and was left for dead with serious injuries. Police believe the attacker fled before being able to take anything from the victim as all of her belongings were still in place. Because the victim is a minor, her name is not being released at this time
Sarah's peaceful and serene state was all but disappearing as she watched the footage. She knew that street, that house. It was clear to her that the victim was her sister, Rachel. The odds of this being some random robbery attempt were slim to none. Sarah in a fit of anger picks up the book she was reading and throws it at the television set, shattering the picture tube. She gets up, taking candles, incense and a few oils. Storming towards the shop's exit. Selene comes down from her room, just in time to watch Sarah storm outside.
Selene: Sarah! Sarah, where are you going? Wait!
Selene, unaware of what was going on, notices the broken television set. She sighs heavily, not knowing what set Sarah off.
The Hospital
We now fade into the interior of UCLA Medical Center. We look on as Sarah is sitting beside a hospital bed. Her sister Rachel is lying there, unconscious. Most of her entire face was bruised, her head was bandaged, blood soaking through the gauze. Her arms bruised just as badly, but nothing could be more horrific than her face having been beaten to a pulp. This was Alec's doing. The imprint of a beer bottle in Rachel's cheek told the story. Sarah holds her sister's hand, talking to her. Even though Rachel was unconscious, Sarah had to believe that somehow, she could hear her.
Sarah: I should have come for you sooner. Rachel, please believe me I have been trying for you. Selene just said you could stay with us. Please make it through this, Rachel. You'll never have to go back there again. I'm going to take care of you, like you're supposed to be.
Sarah grips Rachel's hand tightly, and she kisses her sister's forehead.
Sarah: He's never going to hurt you again, Rachel. I promise you that. He's never going to hurt you again...
Sarah looks down at her sister once more before leaving the room. Her eyes had by now lost all emotion, and the happy, peaceful teen was no more. Anger, hatred ... and evil had returned. But sometimes, you have to be evil. Sometimes there is no justice in good, and only by taking the path of darkness will it prevail.
4:00am - Tujunga, California - Twilight Household
We fade back in to the interior of Sarah's former home. Upstairs in the master bedroom, Alec begins to stir. He staggers out of bed, still feeling the effects of his drunken binge the night before. He belches as he makes his way towards the door. Elizabeth rolls over.
Elizabeth: Where are you going? It's four in the morning.
Alec: I have to piss, shut up and go back to sleep.
Alec finishes up in the restroom, and as he exits the room, he looks around.
Alec: What the fuck? Elizabeth, I swear if you burnt something bitch, I'm going to come back up here and kick the shit out of you!
Alec is smelling smoke, and he slowly makes his way down the stairs. As he reaches the bottom, he is stunned to see light coming from his living room. He finally gets into the room only to see various candles, meticulously placed out around the room, all of them lit. They formed a pattern, an odd shape he'd never seen before ... A five pointed star, within a circle. (pentagram) Alec clenches his fists.
Alec: Somebody wants to play fucking game? Come on out mother fucker. I'll play some fucking games.
Alec steps further into the room and he never saw it coming as he was taken off of his feet in one swift motion. He hits the living room floor hard, and he he looks up to see his daughter, Sarah standing over him, she looks down at him with malice in her eyes.
Sarah: You think you would get away with it, asshole?
Alec: Oh you little bitch! You're gonna be sorry you came back here!
Sarah: They only person here who is going to be sorry is you. You piece of shit!
Alec pulls himself back to his feet and slaps Sarah across the face, he was fully ready to have a fight with his own daughter. The coward that he was. But Sarah laughs at him as he slaps her, and spits in his face.
Sarah: That all you got? You fucking pussy!
Alec is infuriated now and he balls his fist and punches Sarah in the mouth. She holds her jaw, and when she pulls her hand away, she sees a trickle of blood on her fingertips and she smirks before returning the favor with a punch of her own. She unleashes a fury on her father, repeatedly punching him. He swings punches back until Sarah takes his feet out from under him and he finds himself once again on the floor. The commotion has caused Elizabeth to rush down stairs, she sees the ensuing fight and begins screaming.
Elizabeth: What are you doing? Stop it! Stop it now!!
Sarah grabs Alec by the back of his head and smashes his face into the coffee table, she continues to assault him, even when he is no longer defending himself. Amidst the fury, she grabs one of his empty beer bottles and smashes it over his skull, taking the remaining portion of it, she begins to stab him in the chest over and over, screaming at him.
Sarah: You'll never touch her again you piece of shit! NEVER!!!
Alec was bleeding all over the place long before Sarah would stop stabbing and assaulting him. Elizabeth continues to scream, now yelling at Sarah.
Elizabeth: Look what you did! Look what you did! You bitch, I hate you, why did you come here? WHY?
Sarah stands up and looks at her mother with disgust.
Sarah: Shut up! You are just as bad as he is! You never cared about me or about Rachel. She's in the fucking hospital almost DEAD and you two sleep like nothing was fucking wrong!
Sarah backhands her mother with enraged anger. Elizabeth falls to the floor and hits her head on the corner of the stairs, also now falling unconscious.
Sarah: No more. No fucking more!
Sarah looks down at her parents and spits in total disgust. Our scene shifts to Sarah walking away from the house. A cold, malicious evil in her eyes. In the background we see the windows of the home blow out as a blazing fire explodes from them. The house is now engulfed in flames and the sounds of sirens can be heard in the distance.
Selene's shop - A short while later
Sarah returns to the shop, her hands covered in blood and in her eyes, the cold, emotionless nature that Selene remembered when first ever meeting Sarah. Selene rushes over as Sarah comes inside.
Selene: What happened? Sarah? ... Sarah what did you do?
Sarah responds with a flat, calm voice that was eerily familiar.
Sarah: I made things right, that's all.
Selene: Sarah ... tell me what happened?
Sarah: He will never hurt Rachel again.
Selene: Hurt Rachel? Oh no. Sarah you went back there?
Selene sighs.
Selene: Go wash up. We'll talk when you're done. Logan is on his way, we've been worried sick.
Sarah casually walks through the back of the shop, as if she'd done nothing. And gets herself washed up. Meanwhile, as Selene awaits Logan's arrival, she sees headlights shining through the window as a car approaches and parks. After a few moments, there is a sturdy knock at the door. Selene answers to see a man standing there.
Selene: May I help you?
Man: I'm Detective Chapman with LAPD. I'm looking for a Miss ... Sarah Twilight.
Selene: She's here ... may I ask what this is about?
Det. Chapman: I just need to speak with her.
Sarah walks out from the back, surprised to see the man there. He looks up and notices her.
Det. Chapman: You must be Sarah.
Sarah narrows her eyes at the man and nods.
Det. Chapman: Tell me Sarah, where have you been this evening?
Selene interrupts.
Selene: She's been here all night. She helped me close the store and had gone to bed afterwards.
Det. Chapman: Are you sure of this?
Selene: Positive.
The detective scans the room, noticing the broken television set. He walks around the shop.
Det. Chapman: So what happened here tonight? Looks like someone wasn't happy.
Selene: I accidentally broke the set. Was trying to get a fly.
Det. Chapman: I see.
Just then, Logan walks into the shop hurridly and stops, looking on at the scene. He looks at Det. Chapman, recognizing him.
Logan: Harold? What are you doing here?
Det. Chapman: Logan, well I'll be damned. I haven't seen you since High School. I'm conducting a standard investigation here. But isn't it a bit late for a visit?
Logan folds his arms, unsure of what is going on.
Det. Chapman: Now I am going to ask again, where were you this evening, Sarah?
Selene: She was here.
Det. Chapman: I didn't ask you, I asked Sarah.
Logan: Harold, if Selene says she was here. Then she was here.
Det. Chapman: Okay Logan. I'll leave it be for the moment. But I'll be in touch.
Det. Chapman leaves the shop, still looking around as he goes. Once he is gone, Logan and Selene look at Sarah, who is sitting there, emotionless. It was apparent that evil had taken form on this night. All that was good had wandered away and evil stands in it's place. The light was no forever shadowed by the darkness. It has been said that good lies within each of us. That even the most vile and despicable of all have a light hiding within them ... somewhere. When given the chance, that light will grow, and it will shine. However, when evil is allowed to fester within. It too will grow, and the ramifications of its bounds are endless. It takes but one deed to undo all else, good ... or evil.
Our scene fades to black.
